KNOW HIS NAME
“Those who know Your Name will trust in You, for You, Lord, have never forsaken those Who seek You.” Psalm 9:10
In this psalm, David is speaking about knowing God’s Name, but it is much, much more than just knowing His Name, it is KNOWING His Name and what that Name represents. A lot of people say they believe in God. They would say, “Yeah, I know God’s Name, it’s God.” But do they really understand all that His Name means?
David says that all who know God’s Name will trust Him (for everything in their lives). In the Hebrew, the word here for know is “yada” and it means a variety of things. One thing that caught my attention was, “to ascertain by seeing.” Now we know that we cannot physically see God, but we can see Him through our spiritual eyes and KNOW Him. A few other definitions are, “can certainly comprehend, be sure, of a surety.” We can certainly be sure that we know God’s Name because He will reveal Himself to us.
David knew, and we know, that God is our protection. He says, “’Because he loves Me,’ says the Lord, ‘I will rescue him; I will protect him, for he acknowledges My Name.’” (Psa. 91:14). “The Name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe.” (Prov. 18:10). The Lord’s Name is also Jehovah-nissi, “The Lord my banner.” “Moses built an altar and called it, The Lord My Banner.” (Exod. 17:14). The banner is also a symbol of protection because it went in front of the armies of the Lord into battle.
The Name of God also means provision. “So Abraham called that place The Lord Will Provide.” (Jehovah-jireh literally means “the Lord sees” Gen. 22:14). This was in response to the Lord providing a ram for the burnt offering instead of Abraham’s son, Isaac.
Another Name of the Lord is Jehovah-shalom, “The Lord is peace.” “so, Gideon built an altar to the Lord there and called it The Lord is Peace.” (Judg. 6:24). This was in response to Gideon having seen the angel of the Lord and being afraid that he would die. “But the Lord said to him, ‘Peace! Do not be afraid. You are not going to die.’” (Judg. 6:23). God is our peace also. Jesus is known as “The Prince of Peace.” Jesus says, “Peace I leave with you; My peace I give you.” (John 14:27).
These are just some of the Names of God. His Name is Who He is. Do we really KNOW His Name? We will if we really KNOW Him! “Your Name, O Lord, endures forever, Your renown, O Lord, through all generations.” (Psalm 135:13). Praise His Holy Name!
